BATES PLACES TAKES QUAD CUP IV BEHIND DAVIS, ZWICK

The Bates College men's track and field team qualified their third athlete of the season for the NCAA championships en route to a victory at the Quad Cup meet held today in Merrill Gymnasium.

Junior 35-pound weight thrower Rob Davis (Rehoboth, Mass.) joined classmate Lucas Adams (Nottingham, N.H.) as an NCAA qualifier with a throw of 53 feet, 10.75 inches. Davis placed second on the day behind Adams, who won the event with a personal-best heave of 58 feet, seven inches, improving his automatic qualifying mark and ranking him third in the nation. Davis is a provisional qualifier after today's meet.

The other highlight of the day was sophomore Erik Zwick (Virginia Beach, Va.), who set a Bates College and Merrill Gymnasium record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.79 seconds. The 200-meters was the key to the Bobcats' victory. Trailing the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears by one point headed into the 200, Bates scored 20 points in the event. After Zwick's victory, junior Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.) placed third in the event, while senior Peter Beeson (Novelty, Ohio) placed fourth. Beeson also helped the Bobcats by winning the pole vault with a personal best leap of 14 feet, three inches. He just missed a school record with the bar at 15 feet, one inch.

Adams and Coulie also picked up additional Bates wins in the shot put and the long jump, while junior Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) took the mile run in 4:29.88.
