1999 Open New England Championships
at Boston University
Boston, Mass.

Adams, Danahy Shine Again

Two Bates College athletes finished among the top three in their event, helping the Bobcats to a fifth-place standing after Day One of the Open New England Track and Field championships held at Boston University.

Junior Lucas Adams (Nottingham, N.H.) once again set a personal record and improved his national ranking in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 59-4 1/4, good for third place. Adams exceeded his previous personal best by nine and a half inches, and is now ranked third in the nation headed into the NCAA championships, which will be held March 12-13 at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.

Junior Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.), who had already qualified provisionally for the NCAA championships in the 5,000-meter run, removed any doubt as to whether he would be joining Adams in Ohio, running a lifetime best 14:42.13, and taking second place in New England. Danahy improved his lifetime best by 10 seconds and exceeded the automatic qualifying standard by more than five seconds.

The Open New England Championships involve teams from all NCAA divisions from around the region. The Bobcats are currently fifth, tops among Division III programs, with 14 points. The University of Connecticut leads the competition with 36 1/2 points, followed by the University of Rhode Island (24 pts), Yale University (19 pts) and the University of Maine (18 points. Just behind the Bobcats are the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (12 points) and Wheaton College (11.5 points).
