MEN'S TRACK TAKES SECOND AT NESCAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Danahy, Hurley Claim Individual Crowns

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Behind a pair of conference champions and 10 other top-three performances, the Bates College men's track and field team took second place at the NESCAC Championships, their best performance ever under corrent coach Al Fereshetian.

The Bobcats received two championship performances. Distance specialist Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) continued his break-through junior campaign by capturing the 10,000-meter run on Saturday afternoon with a time 31:50.58 in his first attempt at the event under meet conditions. Danahy also came back to take second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:38, good for an automatic berth at the NCAA Division III championships held May 20-22 at Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. The Bobcats' other conference title came from first-year thrower Greg Hurley (Arlington, Mass.), who won the javelin with a personal best throw of 184-6.

Among Bates' notable second- and third-place finishes, sophomore sprinter Erik Zwick (Virginia Beach, Va.) took second in the 200-meter dash, but not before posting the top time in qualifying, 21.77 seconds, good for a provisional spot at the national championships. Zwick also took second in the 100-meter dash. Junior thrower Lucas Adams (Nottingham, N.H.) also had two secnd place finishes, in the hammer throw (183 feet) and the discus (151 feet). Jumpers Jeff Snyder '00 (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Aron Shapiro (Lexington, Mass.) '99 also took second with personal best performances in the high jump and long jump, respectively.
