BOBCATS PLACE THIRD AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Bates College men's track and field team placed third at the 2002 State of Maine Indoor Track and Field championships at Bowdoin. The Bobcats scored 124.5 points, placing behind champions Bowdoin (232.5) and Colby (138) and ahead of Southern Maine (18).

The Bobcats had two Maine champions, both of whom defended their 2001 titles. Senior Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.) won the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 57 feet, 5.5 inches. With the win, Sawler is still undefeated in the event, headed into this weekend's New England Division III championships in Slovenski track. Sophomore Matt Ondra (New Tripoli, Pa.) successfully repeated in the pole vault as well. Ondra reached a height of 13-3, improving last year's winning performance by three inches.

Junior Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) was one of the Bobcats' top scorers on the evening with a pair of top three finishes. Luoma was second in the triple jump with a leap of 43-8.5 and third in the high jump, where he jumped 5-11.25. Two other second-place finishes came from rookie Joe Northrup (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) in the 55-meter hurdles and junior Stephen Gresham (Milton, Mass.) in the 400-meter dash. Senior Jesse Carney (Brunswick, Maine) took third place in the 35-pound weight.
