MIT Invitational SAWLER, HURLEY IMPROVE NCAA WEIGHT STANDING CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Bates seniors Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.) and Greg Hurley (Arlington, Mass.) each improved their standing for the NCAA championships this weekend as the Bobcats finished third at a triangular meet with MIT and Coast Guard. Sawler met the automatic qualifying mark for the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 59 feet, 7.5 inches, a personal record. Sawler, who qualified provisionally at Northeastern last semester, will be heading to his third career indoor track and field championships and his fifth overall. He also placed second in the shot put with a heave of 43-8.75. Hurley, who finished second to Sawler with a toss of 54-7, improved his season-best throw by two-and-a-half feet. He is now ranked sixth in the nation, up from 12th place headed into the semester. The Bobcats' top performer in the track events was first-year Joel Anderson (New Brighton, Minn.), who took third in the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:37.02.
