MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD TAKES THIRD IN OPENING MEET OF SPRING
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Senior co-captain Erik Zwick (Virginia Beach, Va.) won two events as the Bates College men's track and field team placed third of five teams in their season opener at Springfield College.
Zwick was the top sprinter of the meet, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 11.23 and 22.14 seconds, respectively. Junior thrower Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.) was the Bobcats' only other individual event winner on the day, claiming the hammer throw with a heave of 180 feet, 8 inches. His performance far exceeded the NCAA Division III championship provisional qualifying mark of 171-3 and missed the automatic qualifier by just five inches.
As a whole, the Bates throwers scored a large percentage of the Bobcats' 134 points. Classmate Greg Hurley (Arlington, Mass.) took third in the hammer and junior Jesse Carney (Brunswick, Maine) finished sixth. The trio also all scored points in the discus throw, with Carney placing second, Sawler fourth and Hurley fifth. Sawler and Hurley also scored points in a third event, Sawler taking second in the shot put and Hurley third in the javelin.
