The Bates College men's tennis team (0-1) lost more than their first match of the season against Middlebury, 2-5, when No. 2 player, sophomore Robbie Ruttman (Uitenhage, South Africa) was forced to retire with a leg injury just two games into his Bates career. Ruttman, a transfer from Div. I Baylor University, is expected to return later this season.

The Bobcats two wins were impressive performances by the other international members of coach Paul Gastonguay's '89 squad. At No. 1, sophomore Dmitri Kudrjavtsev (Tallinn, Estonia) bounced back from dropping the first set to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. At No. 4, sophomore Milko Todorov (Sophia, Bulgaria) breezed over the Panthers' No. 2 player from a year ago, 6-3, 6-2.
