CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates College men's tennis team had a fine showing at the Bates invitational, with Bobcat athletes reaching the finals of four of the five flights. Junior Robbie Ruttmann (Uitenhage, South Africa) had the best individual performance of the tournament, capturing two title. Ruttmann won the 'A' Singles by dropping only one set. After winning his opening round, 6-0, 6-1, Ruttmann was extended to three sets in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, with the second set ending in a marathon tie-breaker, 13-11. Ruttmann then rolled in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2, and finals, 6-1, 6-3, over the third seed from Bowdoin. The Bobcats also got a gritty performance in the 'B' singles from first-year player Alex MacDonald (Bridgewater, Conn.), who reached the finals before falling. Despite battling some nagging injuries throughout the draw, MacDonald, the fourth seed, did not drop a game in his first two matches, defeating foes from Middlebury and Brandeis. In the semifinals, MacDonald battled back after losing the first set, 4-6, to sweep another set, 6-0, before taking the third, 6-4. Macdonald lost in the finals but not without a fight, taking both sets to tie-breakers before succumbing.

In doubles action, the Bobcats also captured the 'A' flight title, as Ruttmann teamed up with junior Greg Norton (Mansfield, Mass.) as the No. 1 seeded team. Bates blasted opponents from Brandeis University in the first round, 8-0, before defeating the second seed Colby.
