NESCAC Championships
at Williamstown, Mass.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Bates College men's tennis team produced their second-straight finish among the top third of the NESCAC, coming in third with 18 points, behind Williams (30 points) and Trinity (22 points) and ahead of Amherst (16 points) and Bowdoin (13 points). The Bobcats posted a top-three finish for the second straight season despite losing three seniors from last year's second-place team.

Bates' top individual performer was junior Ben Lamanna (Barrington, R.I.), who finished as the runner up in the #5 singles flight and improving to 13-1 this season. Lamanna earned a first-round bye and defeated #10 Mike Marvel of Connecticut College easily in the second, 6-1, 6-0. Lamanna defeated #3 seed Muammer Khan of Trinity after dropping the first set in a hard-fought semifinal, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, before falling to top seed Dan Matro of Williams in the finals, 6-1, 6-0.

The Bates #3 doubles team of senior Milko Todorov (Sofia, Bulgaria) and sophomore Dave Meyer (Weston, Conn.), seeded third, also reached the finals of their bracket. The Bobcat tandem earned a first-round bye before downing in-state rivals Cook and Harbison, the sixth seeds from Colby, in the second round, 6-0, 6-4. Todorov and Meyer upset #2 seeds Sagor and Wellner from Amherst in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-2. Top seeds Frankel and Matro of Williams took the finals, 6-2, 6-2.
