NCAA Division III Tournament DEFENDING CHAMPS DOWN BATES MEN'S TENNIS WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Bates College men's tennis team was unable to dethrone the defending national champion Williams College Ephs in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament today, falling 6-1. The Bobcats lone win came at No. 3 singles, where rookie Alex MacDonald (Bridgewater, Conn.) bounced back from dropping the first set, 6-1, to take the next two, 6-3, 6-3, and claim the match. Senior Dave Carlson (Ramsey, N.J.) and rookie David Meyer (Weston, Conn.), playing their first matches of the season at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, each put up a tough fight before falling, 7-5, in the first set. Bates (8-3) ends its the season in its second-ever NCAA tournament. Williams (13-2), continues its title defense tomorrow against Bowdoin, 4-3 winners over Trinity tomorrow at noon.
