BATES MEN'S SOCCER DOMINATES SOUTHERN MAINE, 6-1 LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College Bobcats (8-5) closed their home schedule in convincing fashion, defeating the University of Southern Maine Huskies (5-13), 6-1. The Bobcats got the scoring started early when sophomore midfielder Chris Sporcic (Stratham, N.H.) took a pass from junior tri-captain Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) and volleyed it home with his left foot just 1:35 into the game. Apstein also scored two goals of his own for his second multiple-goal game of the season and fifth of his career. Junior Ted Martin (Excelsior, Minn.) scored his third goal of the season and of his career in the second half. The Bobcats also got the first career goals from first-year player Drew Weymouth (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore Eric Remson (Williston, Vt.). Southern Maine's lone goal was the first tally of the season for sophomore midfielder Adam Marquis (Gorham, Maine). A deep ball bounced of the Bates post away from first-year goalie Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) to a waiting Marquis, who tapped it in. Bates outshot USM, 17-3. Spector and senior goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) combined for two saves, while junior Corey Fleming (Enfield, Maine) had seven stops for the Huskies.
