Junior tri-captain Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) notched his first career hat trick as the Bates College Bobcats (1-0) defeated the Maine-Farmington Beavers (1-1) in men's soccer. Senior tri-captain Eric Trickett (Windham, N.H.) added three assists as Bates had its most prolific scoring game since 1996.

Apstein got the scoring started just over eight minutes into the game. Bates seemed to get on the board in the first five minutes, but sophomore Chris Sporcic (Stratham, N.H.) had a goal called back. Sporcic did get a goal in the 26th minute. Senior Stephen Coco (Auburn, N.H.) closed out the Bobcat scoring in the first half when he headed in Trickett's indirect kick. UMF junior Kris O'Neil (Portland, Ore.) scored less than two minutes before halftime for the Beavers lone tally.

Senior goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) and first-year keeper Dan Spector combined to make three saves, while UMF goalies Chris Roy (Lewiston, Maine) and Nick Moulton (Parsonsfield, Maine) combined for 12 stops.
