LaFAUCI, BATES, DOWN COLBY IN ECAC FIRST-ROUND MATCHUP, 2-1, IN 2 OVERTIMES

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior midfielder Chad LaFauci (No. Andover, Mass.) had a goal and an assist as the Bates College Bobcats avenged an earlier 1-0 loss with a 2-1 victory over the Colby College White Mules in double overtime, giving the Bobcats their first-ever post-season win.

After a scoreless first half, Colby (8-6-1) broke the ice in the 66th minute. Following a corner kick, junior midfielder Patrick Keenan (Barrington, R.I.) found senior reserve forward Mike Salerno (Somers, Conn.) waiting in front of the net. Salerno one-timed it past Bates goalkeeper Brian Anton (Boca Raton, Fla.) for a 1-0 Colby lead.

The Bobcats (10-5) evened the score with under two minutes remaining in regulation. LaFauci threaded a pass to first-year player Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) at the top of the box. Spector, the Bobcats' back-up goalie, had been subsituted into the lineup as a forward because of his throw-in ability. He shot it along the ground and past a diving Justin Amirault (Plymouth, Mass.) to send the game into overtime with 1:36 left on the clock.

Neither team scored in the first overtime. Colby was hampered by the loss of sophomore midfielder Noam Dorras (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to a red card with 32 second left in regulation, forcing the White Mules to play a man down in the extra time. LaFauci took advantage in the second overtime, streaking to a ball sent from junior forward Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) and shooting it home with just under five minutes left in the period.

Anton made 11 saves for the Bobcats in the win, while Amirault had a season-high 21 saves for Colby. Bates will face Tufts University in the semifinals at a date and site to be determined. The Jumbos were 3-2 overtime winners against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
