BATES SETS SCHOOL SHUTOUT RECORD WITH 2-0 WIN AT SOUTHERN MAINE

GORHAM, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team (8-4-1) set a new school record today by recording their ninth shutout of the season, 2-0, over the host University of Southern Maine Huskies (5-10-3).

The Bobcats got on the board early, when junior midfielder Chris Sporcic (Stratham, N.H.) scored his third goal in the last four games in the eighth minute. Sophomore forward Drew Weymouth (Holden, Mass.) picked up the assist, giving him points in three straight games. The play was tight for most of the rest of the game, with the Bates defense dominating the Huskies. The Bobcats got an insurance goal late in the game when senior forward Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) notched his sixth goal of the season and the 24th of his career on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) increased his team record for shutouts in a season to eight by making five stops, while USM keeper Corie Fleming had 11 saves in the losing effort. The Bobcats tie a record they set earlier this season with four-straight shutouts. They will look to break the record against CBB rival Bowdoin at noon on Saturday in their regular season finale.
