FIRST YEARS LEAD BATES PAST ST. JOSEPH'S, 3-0 LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College rookie class scored two goals and assisted another as the Bobcats (2-2) defeated the St. Joseph's (Maine) College Monks, 3-0, on Lafayette Street Field today. The Bobcats got all the scoring they needed in the 20th minute when first-year forward Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) and junior midfielder Chris Sporcic (Stratham, N.H.) broke in, two against the goalkeeper, with Sporcic picking up his first goal of the season. The Bobcats dominated the rest of the first half, outshooting the Monks, 11-3. Bates was unable to increase the lead until the final 10 minutes of the contest, when Luoma took a feed from senior Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) and scored from 12 yards out. Luoma now leads the Bobcats with four goals and nine points this season. The Bobcats iced the game just over two minutes later when first-year back Jeff Critchlow (Carlisle, Mass.) scored his first career goal off a Sporcic corner kick. Sophomore Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Emlen Harmon (So. Berwick, Maine) combined to make two saves in goal for the shutout, while St. Joseph's senior Michael Bolanz (Belmont, Mass.) made eight saves in the losing effort. The Bobcats next face Plymouth State College on Sept. 29.
