BATES FALLS JUST SHORT IN UPSET BID OF MIDDLEBURY

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Bates College men's soccer team went to double overtime for the second straight game, but wound up on the wrong side of decision, 3-2, against Middlebury.

Middlebury took a 1-0 lead just over six minutes into the game when Kyle Dezotell headed the ball past Bates keeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.), who made a start last season against the Panthers. Junior John Giannacopoulos doubled the lead in the 26th minute, winding through the Bates defense.

The Bobcats kept the pressure on, however, cutting into the lead just before halftime. First-year forward Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) jumped on a Middlebury defensive breakdown in the 41st minute. Luoma, who scored the game-winner against Maine-Farmington with in the 120th minute, came up with some magic again, converting a rebound with 17 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. In the second sudden death frame, Dezotell scored his second goal of the contest, spoiling the Bobcats' upset bid. Spector and Middlebury goalie Brian Hamm each made four saves in the contest.
