LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team opened their season with one of the toughest opponents they will see all year, dropping a 2-0 decision to DePauw University of Greenfield, Ind., the 20th ranked team in the most recent NSCAA Division III national poll.

Though Bates controlled play for much of the first half, it was the Tigers who put the only score on the board. Just over 15 minutes into the game, sophomore midfielder Drew Weymouth (Holden, Mass.) was whistled for a hand-ball in the box. DePauw senior midfielder Craig Myers (Indianapolis, Ind.) calmly put home the ensuing penalty kick.

DePauw added to their lead in the 67th minute when first-year midfielder Kenneth Cochrane (Indianapolis, Ind.) sent a cross from the right side of the 18-yard line to the far post where junior Phillip Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) headed the ball past Bates sophomore goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.).

The Bobcats had a golden opportunity to cut the deficit in half with just over five minutes remaining in the contest when Weymouth was hauled down from behind in the box. DePauw senior goalkeeper Adam Lux (Mason, Ohio) came up huge, deflecting Bates seniorAndy Apstein's (Waban, Mass.) penalty shot and the ensuing rebound.

The Bobcats fall to 0-1 on the season. They will travel to Maine-Farmington on Tuesday. DePauw wraps the trip with a 3-0 record after wins over Bates and Colby, and returns to Indiana to take on Wabash College.
