EARLY GOALS GIVE BATES MEN'S SOCCER CBB WIN OVER COLBY, 3-0

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team (7-4-1) scored a pair of goals in the first eight minutes and cruised from there to earn their eighth shutout of the season, tying a team record, in a 3-0 win over in-state rival Colby College (6-6).

Senior forward Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass.) started the scoring at 6:15, using his speed to break through the defense and blast it home unassisted. Junior midfielder Bryan Stevens (Southwick, Mass.) doubled the lead 1:10 later when he knocked in a rebound of a shot off the foot of sophomore forward Drew Weymouth (Holden, Mass.). First-year forward Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.), facing a team that was missing his brother, Sean, due to injury, capped the victory with an unassisted goal with 10 seconds remaining. The goal was Luoma's ninth of the season, one short of the single-season rookie record.

Sophomore Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) made four saves for his seventh shutout of the season, establishing a new single-season record, surpassing Jay Ladieu '94. Apstein's goal was the 23rd of his career, third-best total in school history, while his 64 points are now alone in second place on the point scoring list. The Bobcats will have a shot at the CBB crown next weekend against Bowdoin.
