BATES MEN'S SOCCER PICKS UP SECOND STRAIGHT OT WIN, 1-0, OVER WESLEYAN

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team (6-4, 2-3 NESCAC) improved to 3-0 in overtime this season, including their last two wins in a row, by defeating the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals (5-5, 2-4 NESCAC), 1-0, on Leahey Field today.

The winning goal came four minutes before time expired. First-year midfielder Anthony Silva (Salem, Mass.) fed a through ball to senior midfielder Bryan Stevens (Southwick, Mass.) that the captain blastes home from 12 yards out. The goal was Stevens' team-leading sixth of the season, including his second in OT. Stevens also handed Amherst a sudden-death loss in the second game of the season.

Bates junior goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) had eight saves in his third solo shutout of the season, while Wesleyan senior Mark Penrod (Piedmont, Calif.) had two stops in the losing effort. Wesleyan had some fine chances, outshooting Bates, 14-11, and recording five more corner kicks, but could not break through the Bobcat defense in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
