BATES BLANKS SOUTHERN MAINE, 2-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team recorded its third shutout of the season as the Bobcats blanked the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 2-0, on Leahey Field today.

The Bobcats (4-3, 1-2 NESCAC) spent most of the first half in the offensive portion of the field but were unable to break through until just before halftime. With 36 seconds on the clock, the Huskies were whistled for a foul. Sophomore forward Mike Masi (York, Maine) took the kick and caught the USM defense napping, tapping a pass to senior back Walter Shicko (Rocky Hill, Conn.) at the 18-yard line. Shicko one-timed it along the ground, beating USM keeper Chad Bouchard (Frenchville, Maine).

Masi picked up his second assist of the game midway through the second half, when he dribbled along the 18 and fed sophomore reserve Josh Myer (Los Angeles, Calif.), who blasted home his first career goal from the top of the semicircle in the 77th minute.

Bates junior goalkeeper Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) made one save in the win, while Bouchard had 11 stops for the Huskies. The Bobcats snap a three-game losing streak with the win, while USM has dropped four straight. Bates next hosts top-ranked Williams College on Saturday. Southern Maine (3-8-1, 0-2 LEC) will face Little East rival UMass-Dartmouth, also on Saturday.
