BOBCATS FALL TO .500 WITH 2-1 LOSS AT TUFTS

(Taken from a Tufts University press release)

MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates College men's soccer team fell to 3-3 on the season with a 2-1 loss today at Tufts.

Sophomore Matt MacGregor (Little Compton, R.I.) and junior Brad Stitchberry (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) teamed up for the two goals that lifted the Jumbos to the important NESCAC victory.

MacGregor headed in a crossing pass from Stitchberry in the 23rd minute for his second goal to give Tufts a 1-0 lead. The lead remained one going into halftime. Just one minute into the second half MacGregor returned the favor. He set up Stitchberry's third goal of the year, which he put into the side netting from close range, for a 2-0 Tufts lead.

Bates made a game of it in the 64th minute when senior Isaac Ugbabe (Jos, Nigeria) scored his first career goal, drilling a shot from 20 yards out that hit off the post and into the net to cut the margin in half. The Bobcats could not net the equalizer and went down to their third straight defeat after starting 3-0 (3-3 overall, 1-2 NESCAC). Tufts won its first NESCAC game (1-1-2 league, 3-1-2 overall). Goalkeepers Steve McDermid (Shorewood, Minn.) for Tufts and Dan Spector (Framingham, Mass.) for Bates both played well. McDermid got the win with 10 saves, while Spector stopped 12 balls. Tufts is now unbeaten in the last three games (2-0-1) of this series.
