Bates 12, Wingate 11
The Bobcats (1-0) opened their season in North Carolina by holding off
Division II Wingate University (0-1), 12-11. Bates got on the board three
times in the first period with two goals coming from 1997's leading goal
scorer, sophomore attack Mike D'Addario (Locust Valley, N.Y.). The Bobcats
opened up a 5-1 lead midway through the second quarter on a pair of goals
from first-year attack Dylan Cruess (Concord, N.H.). The Bulldogs climbed
back in the game with two goals, but senior captain Jay Lively's (North
Falmouth, Mass.) unassisted goal with 37 seconds left in the period gave
Bates a 6-3 halftime lead. Wingate stormed out in the second half, scoring
the first four goals of the third period, but sophomore attack Jon Miller
(Canton, Mass.) scored one goal and assisted another by D'Addario to tie
the game at eight going into the fourth period. The Bobcats stormed out in
the last period, picking up three goals in the first five minutes,
including Lively and Cruess scoring less than 20 seconds apart to give
Bates an 11-8 lead. Wingate scored the next two goals, but senior
defenseman and captain Frank Lombardi (Simsbury, Conn.) notched the
game-winner with 3:58 remaining. D'Addario and Cruess led the Bobcats with
four goals, while Miller had three assists and one goal. Sophomore goalie
Jason Beyer (Peekskill, N.Y.) made 15 saves in the win.
