Wesleyan 13, Bates 7
The Bates College men's lacrosse team (4-2) ran into a Wesleyan (7-0)
squad which was off to its best start in 30 years and lost by a score of
13-7. The game got off to a close start, with the teams alternating goals
in the first period. Senior Jay Lively (No. Falmouth, Mass.) scored the
Bobcats' first goal unassisted to tie the game, 1-1. After the Cardinals
scored again, first-year Dylan Cruess (Concord, N.H.) made a nice pass to
classmate Aaron
Sells (Brookline, Mass.), who tied the game again. The Bobcats took a
brief 3-2 lead when
junior MIke Apfelbaum (Harrisburg, Pa.) made a beautiful feed between two
defenders to
sophomore Mike D'Addario (Locust Valley, N.Y.) who fired a shot from about
15 feet out. The Cardinals scored the first of five straight goals with
under a minute to go in the first quarter. They held the Bobcats scoreless
thoughout the second to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Wesleyan appeared
to put the game out of reach by scoring four of the first five goals of
the second half to take a 10-4 lead. The Bobcats responded, however,
as Apfelbaum popped in a goal with eight
seconds left in the third period. Bates cut the lead to 11-7 with two
minutes left in the game, but Wesleyan was able to counter with two goals
of their own to give them the final margin of victory. Sophomore goalies
Jason Beyer (Peekskil, N.Y.) and Dirk Huntington (Falls Church,
Va.) combined to make 32
saves.
