The Bates College men's lacrosse team (6-4) defeated MIT, 15-7, in Lewiston today. The Bobcats scored the first three goals of the game less than five minutes into the first period, two by sophomore Jon Miller (Canton, Mass.), but MIT answered with three of their own. The Engineers tied it with 1:41 left in the period on a goal by junior Gene Pyo (McLean, Va.) and took a brief 4-3 lead midway through the second period when first-year midfielder Pascal Rettig (Watertown, Mass.) scored the second of his team-high three goals. Bates answered with goals from junior attack Mike Apfelbaum (Harrisburg, Pa.) and sophomore Mike D'Addario (Locaust Valley, N.Y.), the latter with 2:10 left in the half to put the Bobcats up for good. In the third period, Apfelbaum and senior Jay Lively (North Falmouth, Mass.) each had a goal and two assists as Bates took a 9-6 lead which they cemented with a 6-1 advantage in the final period. Lively led all scorers with 10 points on three goals and seven assists, his second 10-point game of the season. Apfelbaum, D'Addario, and Lively each recorded hat tricks for the Bobcats, while Rettig notched three for MIT. Sophomore goalie Jason Beyer (Peekskill, N.Y.) had eight saves for Bates, while sophomore Justin Verdirame (Suffolk, Va.) had 14 for MIT. The Bobcats next host Tufts on Tuesday.
