BATES LACROSSE DEFEATS KING'S POINT IN FIRST ROUND OF DREW UNIVERSITY INVITATIONAL MADISON, N.J. - The Bates College men's lacrosse team (3-1) notched their second one-goal win of the season, defeating the United States Merchant Marine Academy (3-2), 6-5, in the opening round of the Drew Univeristy Invitational. Sophomore Dylan Cruess (Concord, N.H.) scored both of his two goals in the first period to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead after one. The Mariners responded, scoring the next three goals in the second period to take a brief 3-2 lead with 5:52 left in the half, but first-year attack Dave Frederick (Hartford, Conn.) responded 44 seconds later to knot the game at 3-3 headed into halftime. In the second half, the Bobcats scored three times in the third quarter, while the defense allowed just two goals in the half, helping preserve the win. Juniors Dirk Huntington (Falls Church, Va.) and David Pillsbury (Gill, Mass.) combined for 16 saves in the victory.
