BATES MEN'S LACROSSE HOLDS OFF TUFTS, 12-10, FOR NESCAC VICTORY MEDFORD, Mass. - Two fourth-quarter goals apiece by first-year attackman Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) and senior Mike Apfelbaum (Harrisburg, Pa.) helped the visiting Bate College Bobcats (6-5) post a 12-10 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos (4-9) in a hard-fought NESCAC men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Leading 8-7 heading into the fourth quarter, Sandler and Apfelbaum tallied back-to-back goals to open the stanza, giving Bates a 10-7 lead with 10:36 left in regulation. Sandler extended the lead to four goals with 2:48 remaining. The Jumbos answered with goals by senior Trevor Soponis (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Greg Molinelli (Northport, N.Y.) scored within 37 second of each other to cut the lead to 11-10 with 1:32 remaining, but Apfelbaul sealed the win with a tally with 37 left in the game. Two of Tufts sophomore Dan Kollar's (Middle Island, N.Y.) game-high three goals came in the first quarter as the Jumbos claimed a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes. Consecutive Bobcat tallies by sophomore Aaron Sells (Brookline, Mass.), junior Peter Fell (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and first-year Dave Frederick (Hartford, Conn.) in the second quarter turned a 4-4 tie into 7-4 Bates lead, which the Bobcats would not relinquish, with 4:24 left in the first half. Both goalies performed well, with Bates junior David Pillsbury (Gill, Mass.) stopping 12 shots for the win and Tufts first-year keeper Kurt Lutwyler (Ridgewood, N.J.) making 20 saves.
