BATES MEN'S LAX TROUNCES SWARTHMORE, 14-4

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Playing their fourth neutral site game of the season, the Bates College men's lacrosse team (5-4) downed Swarthmore College (2-7) on the campus of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., by a score of 14-4.

The Bobcats were paced by junior midfielder Kevin Purviance (Glastonbury, Conn.), who notched a career-high five points on three goals and two assists. Bates also got hat tricks from a pair of first-year attackers, Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.), who was playing in front of a hometown crowd, and Dave Frederick (Hartford, Conn.). Both added an assist for a four-point game. Junior long-stick middie Peter Fell (Chappaqua, N.Y.) had two goals. Swarthmore was led by Kobi Smith with two goals and one tally apiece from Mark Dingfield and Blake Avery.

The Bates special teams played well, allowing just one goal in 11 extra-man chances by the Garnet, while converting four of eight extra-man opportunities of their own. Junior Dirk Huntington (Falls Church, Va.) made 10 saves in three quarters of work, while classmate Dave Pillsbury had five saves in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats improved their record to 3-1 in neutral site games this season.
