DEFENSE KEYS SECOND HALF SURGE IN BATES' 10-6 WIN OVER PLYMOUTH STATE

LEWISTON, Maine -- After a close first half, the Bates College defense allowed just one goal over the final 30 minutes as the Bobcats defeated Plymouth State College in men's lacrosse action on Garcelon Field today.

The Bobcats (8-5) led 6-5 at the half, but outscored PSC, 3-0, in the third quarter to open up a 9-5 lead, the first two-goal advantage of the contest. Bates was bolstered by the play of junior Dirk Huntington (Falls Church, Va.), who stopped nine of 10 Panther shots on goal in the second half after coming on in relief of classmate David Pillsbury (Gill, Mass.).

The Bates offense was paced by first-year attack Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.), who scored a career-high five goals, while adding two assists for a seven-point game, matching the career-best he set in the first game of the season. Sophomore midfielder Dylan Cruess (Concord, N.H.) added two goals and an assist for the Bobcats, while junior midfielder Peter Fell (Chappaqua, N.Y.) had a pair of assists. Plymouth State (6-7) was led by sophomore attack Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.), who posted a hat trick, while senior attack Josh Perry (Falmouth, Mass.) and senior midfielder Nate Ostis (Yarmouth, Maine) each had a goal and an assist.
