BATES MEN'S LACROSSE SINKS MAINE MARITIME, 20-4

LEWISTON -- The Bates College men's lacrosse team (4-2) went nearly 50 minutes without allowing a goal as they cruised to victory in their home opener, 20-4, against Maine Maritime Academy (3-4).

Ten different Bobcats scored goals, led by first-year attackman Dave Frederick (Hartford, Conn.), who had four goals and two assists. The other two starting attackers, first-year Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) and senior Mike Apfelbaum (Harrisburg, Pa.) each had three goals. The Bobcats also got multiple-goal performances from midfielders sophomore Aaron Sells (Brookline, Mass.), junior Jon Miller (Canton, Mass.) and senior Ben Guardenier (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.). Juniors Dirk Huntington (Falls Church, Va.) and David Pillsbury (Gill, Mass.) combined for 10 saves in the first three quarters, while first-year Ted Trafton (Rumford, R.I) had three saves in the fourth.

Maine Maritime was led by senior Justin Thone (Buckfield, Maine) who had three goals and sophomore Scott Driscoll (West Haven, Conn.), who had one. Thone broke the scoreless drought at the 12 minute mark of the fourth quarter when the Mariners were on an extra-man opportunity.
