LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College White Mules (4-2) used a six-goal fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeat the Bates College Bobcats (4-4) here today, 12-4.

The Bobcats got on the board first on a goal by first-year attackman Dave Frederick (Hartford, Conn.) less than two minutes into the contest. Colby answered with the next three tallies to lead 3-1 after one period. The White Mules added two more goals in the second period before Bates first-year attacker Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored just before the half, cutting the Colby lead to 5-2 at the intermission.

The Bobcats sliced the lead to 5-3 when junior longstick middie Peter Fell (Chappaqua, N.Y.) cleared the ball on a Colby extra-man situation and raced the length of the field before dishing off to Frederick for his second goal of the game. Colby scored once more in the third to take a 6-3 lead into the final stanza, where they put the game away, scoring twice in the span of 53 seconds early in the period to go up, 8-3. The Bobcats cut into the lead on a nice headfake by sophomore Aaron Sells (Brookline, Mass.), but Colby scored three more goals in the final three minutes to ice the game at 12-4.

Fredericks' two goals paced the Bobcats, while Fell notched two points on a pair of assists. Junior Dirk Huntington (Falls Church, Va.) made 16 saves for Bates.
