BOBCATS WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT, 18-7, OVER PLYMOUTH STATE

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College men's lacrosse team won its fifth consecutive game today, defeating the Plymouth State College Panthers, 18-7, under the lights of Campus Avenue Field. The streak is the Bobcats longest since a six-game streak in 1987.

Bates (5-1) converted four of its five extra-man opportunities on the evening. The Bobcats improved to 13-of-27 for the season in that category. Three different players scored goals in the first quarter as Bates jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Senior midfielder Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) was the only Bobcat to score twice in the stanza. Bates has now outscored opponents 21-7 in the first quarter this season.

Senior attack Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.) added three of his game high five goals in the third quarter as Bates extended its lead to 10-4 at halftime. A 6-0 advantage in the third period put the game out of reach, although Plymouth State outscored Bates, 3-2 in the fourth quarter as five different Panthers scored points.

Frederick ended the contest with seven points (5G, 2A), while fellow seniors and Duxbury, Mass., residents Gaughan (3G) and Matt Winterle (2G, 1A) also had three-point games. PSC got two-goal games from junior Kevin Finnerty (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and classmate Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.), while junior Jason Biedrezycki ) had a goal and an assist. Junior Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made eight saves in three quarters of work, while Plymouth State junior Dan Egan (Cambridge, Mass.) had nine stops in the losing effort.
