SANDLER LEADS BATES MEN'S LAX PAST NEC, 18-6

LEWISTON, Maine — Senior attack Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored five goals and two assists for seven points as the Bates College men's lacrosse team won its home opener today, 18-6, over New England College.

The Bobcats (1-1) opened the game strongly, scoring eight unanswered goals, starting with a tally by sophomore Peter Fedullo (Williamson, N.Y.) just 1:20 into the contest. Sandler scored the next Bates goal and assisted the third goal, an extra-man tally by senior Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.). The Bobcats extended the lead to 5-0 by the end of the first period and went ahead 8-0 on Sandler's second goal of the game with 9:20 left in the first half.

New England College (0-1) got on the board midway through the second quarter on a goal by junior midfielder Josh Dionne (Brunsiwck, Maine). The Bobcats scored twice more before the Pilgrims responded on an unassisted goal by rookie midfielder Dave Real (Brunswick, Maine) cutting the lead to 10-2. Bates took an 11-2 margin into the break on an extra-man goal by first-year Peter Friedman (Putney, Vt.) just before the half.

The Bobcats, who converted all four of their extra man chances on the afternoon, including two just as the penalty expired, also staved off a prime chance by NEC to start the fourth period. The Pilgrims got a three-minute man advantage because of an illegal stick, but they managed only one goal, despite playing with a two-man-up situation for the final 30 seconds.

Besides Sandler, Bates got multi-goal games from senior midfielder Matt Winterle (Duxbury, Mass.), who had three goals and an assist for four points, while Fedullo added two goals. Sophomore Brad Frost (Winchester, Mass.), Frederick and Sandler all had two assists on the afternoon. Junior Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) had nine saves on the afternoon.

NEC was led by three goals from Dionne and two from Real, while rookie Pete Kimmel (Baltimore, Md.) and Nick Mayo (Marshfield, Mass.) had two assists apiece. Junior goalkeeper Matt Brawn (Topsham, Maine) had 27 saves in the losing effort.
