Bates 10, Bowdoin 7
at Brunswick, Maine

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Senior attack Jack Sandler(Hicksville, N.Y.) and the Bates College men's lacrosse team stunned in-state and New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Bowdoin, 10-7, in Brunswick today. Sandler scored three goals and three assists as the Bobcats topped Bowdoin, the No. 10 team in the nation, for the first time since 1985.

Bates (6-4, 2-3 NESCAC) also got five points from senior Dave Frederick(W. Hartford, Conn.) on two goals and three assists and three goals from rookie attack Peter Friedman (Putney, Vt.) as the Bobcat front line outscored Bowdoin's, 9-4. Bates also recorded assists on all 10 of its goals, as junior midfielder Jeff Critchlow (Carlisle, Mass.) also added three helpers and rookie face-off specialist Greg Leonard (Manlius, NY) had one.

Bowdoin (7-3, 4-2, NESCAC) scored the first goal of the contest when senior Simon McKay (Carlisle, Mass) tallied less than 2:30 in. Bates senior midfielder Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) answered on Fredricks' first assist with 6:45 remaining, while Sandler's first goal with 2:49 left in the first gave Bates the lead. The Bobcats never trailed again, though Bowdoin answered the next four Bates goals. Friedman's first goal 48 seconds before the break gave the Bobcats a 5-4 lead at intermission.

At the start of the second half, the Polar Bears killed a two-man advantage early in the third stanza. Bowdoin senior midfielder Hunter Walter (Pepper Pike, Ohio) tied the game at 5-5 less than a minute after the kill. Bates answered with three straight goals, their only consecutive tallies after the first quarter. Sandler ignited the run by feeding Frederick for a short-handed goal with 9:19 on the clock in the third. Critchlow picked up two straight assists to give Bates an 8-5 margin. Bowdoin cut the lead to two with under two minutes left in the period, but some staunch Bates defense never let the margin get any closer.

Bates goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made 15 saves in the winning effort, while Bowdoin's Grant White (Charlottesville, Va.) and P.J. Prest (Potomac, Md.) combined to make nine stops in the losing effort.

Bates hosts Tufts and Amherst in a pair of NESCAC contests on Saturday and Sunday, while Bowdoin hosts Amherst on Saturday.
