Amherst 8, Bates 7 (OT) BATES DROPS OT CONTEST TO AMHERST, 8-7 LEWISTON, Maine Amherst College sophomore attack Craig McBeth (Wycoff, N.J.) scored an extra-man goal 17 seconds into overtime to give Lord Jeffs an 8-7 victory over the host Bates College Bobcats in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action today. Both teams were playing in their second straight overtime game. Bates (7-5, 3-4 NESCAC) had defeated Tufts yesterday, while Amherst (6-6, 3-4 NESCAC) was losing to Bowdoin. Bates did not trail during regulation. The Bobcats were up 3-1 after the first period, 3-2 at the half and 5-4 through three quarters after killing off a three-man disadvantage midway through the third period. Bates senior Jack Sandler (Hickville, N.Y.) scored on a feed from classmate Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) early in the fourth to snap a 6-6 tie. Amherst answered, but Gaughan's goal with 2:38 on the clock looked to put the game away. Amherst senior M Harlow Voorhees (Chevy Chase, Md.) sent game into overtime with a goal with 1:08 remaining before McBeth won it on an assist from rookie Alex Casertano (Millbrook, N.Y.). Voorhees and Bates first-year attack Peter Friedman (Putney, Vt.) tied for game-high honors with three goals each, while Voorhees and Gaughan both scored four points. Gaughan had a game-high three assists. Bates junior goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made 13 saves in the losing effort, while Lord Jeff rookie Cushing Donelan (Noroton, Conn.) made 12 stops.
