Wesleyan 10, Bates 8 BATES MEN'S LAX DROPS NESCAC OPENER, 10-8, TO WESLEYAN WEST HAVEN, Conn. The Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team snapped a 6-6 tie midway through the third quarter as the Cardinals hung on to defeat the visiting Bates College Bobcats, 10-8, in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener for both teams. Bates (3-2, 0-1 NESCAC) fell behind 4-1 early in the second quarter before scoring four unanswered goals. Senior midfielder Aaron Sells (Brookline, Mass.) notched his second of three goals on the day with five seconds left in the first half to give Bates a 5-4 lead at the break. The Bobcats increased the lead to 6-4 on a goal by junior Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) three minutes into the third period. Wesleyan (6-1, 1-0 NESCAC) answered with a four-goal streak of their own, reclaiming the lead on a tally by Rob Wilcox, who took a pass from Jeff DelRosso and scored from 25 yards out. Wesleyan took an 8-6 lead into the fourth quarter and the two teams played even in the final period. Bates' Dave Frederick (West Hartford, Conn.), with three goals and two assists, led all scorers with five points. Wesleyan's Andrew Rotando notched four assists, while John Landay had three goals and an assist for the Cardinals.
