BATES MEN'S LAX WINS FIRST HOME NIGHT GAME, 8-5, OVER PLYMOUTH STATE

LEWISTON, Maine —The Bates College men's lacrosse team scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter to take the first-ever night game at John Bertram Field, 8-5, over the visiting Plymouth State College Panthers.

Bates (3-1) scored the first two goals of the contest before PSC tied the game on an extra-man situation seven seconds into the second period. Bobcat junior Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored two of his team-high three goals in a four-minute span in the second. Sandler gave Bates a 4-2 lead it would not relinquish when he intercepted a clear attempt by the Panther goalkeeper and deposited the ball in the empty net. Plymouth State (0-2) cut the lead to 4-3 two minutes before halftime when senior captain Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.) scored the last of his three first-half tallies shorthanded.

Bates junior Dave Frederick (West Hartford, Conn.) increased the lead to 5-3 with the first of his three goals less than three minutes into the second half. PSC answered again on a goal by senior J.P. Sallese (Beverly, Mass.) at 9:53, but the Panthers would only score once more in the final 24 minutes of the contest. Frederick's second goal of the contest gave Bates all the margin they would need with 8:03 left in the third quarter as the Bobcats held an opponent to just five goals for the third consecutive contest.

Both goalkeepers performed well to keep their teams in the contest. Bates sophomore Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made 15 saves, a career-high. Plymouth State junior keeper Jon Clark (Yarmouth, Maine) had 22 saves in the losing effort.
