FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACK PACES BATES MEN PAST COLBY
Gaughan goal with 26 seconds left lifts Bobcats

LEWISTON, Maine — Junior midfielder Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) scored his only goal on an assist from classmate Dave Frederick (West Hartford, Conn.) with 26 seconds left in the contest, capping a fourth-quarter comeback and leading the host Bates College Bobcats past the visiting Colby College White Mules, 9-8, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse contest today. Bates' win was their first over Colby since 1986 and gave head coach Peter Lasagna his first NESCAC victory.

The first half was evenly played as both teams scored two goals in each of the first two quarters, sending the contest to the half tied, 4-4. Colby (1-3, 0-2 NESCAC) was paced by senior attack Bill Getty (Allison Park, Pa.), who scored three goals in the first half, while Bates (4-3, 1-2 NESCAC) got two tallies by junior Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.), including one 22 seconds before the half expired.

The White Mules jumped out in the third period as Getty scored just over 30 seconds in and again a minute and a half later on an extra-man opportunity at 12:57 to give Colby a 7-5 edge. Sophomore Blake Grosch (Summit, N.J.) scored with 1:06 left in the third for the largest lead of the game, 8-5.

Following a huge hit by Sandler on Colby's Chris Larson (New Canaan, Conn.) early in the fourth, the Bobcats started their comeback. Rookie Brad Frost (Winchester, Mass.) tallied with 8:34 on the clock to cut the deficit to two goals before Sandler tied the game with goals at 6:37 and 4:16. The latter was assisted by Frederick. Senior captain Aaron Sells (Brookline, Mass.) ripped a shot from 15 yards out to give Bates the lead with 3:30 remaining, the Bobcats' first lead since early in the second period. Colby senior Jemison Foster (Warsaw, Ohio) answered with 1:58 left before Gaughan came up with his heroics, jumping to take a feed from Frederick and putting it past White Mule goalkeeper Ben Park (Andover, Mass.).

Colby's Getty led all scorers with five goals, while Bates' Sandler had four to lead the Bobcats. Frederick and Colby's Barron Butler (Marblehead, Mass.) each had two assists. Bates goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) had 15 saves for the Bobcats, while Park made 16 in the losing effort for Colby.
