BATES MEN FALL IN SECOND LEG OF CBB, 7-3, TO BOWDOIN

LEWISTON, Maine —The Bowdoin men's lacrosse team outscored the host Bates College Bobcats, 4-0, in the third period as the Polar Bears took a 7-3 decision in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) play on John Bertram Field today.

Bowdoin (5-3, 4-1 NESCAC, 1-0 CBB) senior Alex Ellis (Brookline, Mass.) scored twice in the first period to give the Polar Bears, ranked 19th in the nation in the most recent USILA poll, a 2-0 lead. Bates (4-5, 1-4 NESCAC) junior Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.) got the Bobcats on the board three minutes into the second quarter before Bowdoin sophomore Bart McMann (Marshfield, Mass.) upped the lead to 3-1. Bates sophomore Jeff Critchlow (Mansfield, Mass.) closed out the first-half scoring when he intercepted a clearing attempt and went straight to the net to cu the lead to 3-2 with 5:32 remaining before the break.

Ellis started the decisive run just over three minutes into the third period on a feed from senior midfielder Wendell Simonson (Brookline, Mass.) and returned the favor five minutes later. McMann and Simonson each scored before the end of the period to give the Polar Bears a 7-2 lead headed into the fourth. Frederick assisted classmate Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y.) midway through the fourth period, but Bates could not break through the Bowdoin defense.

Ellis led all scorers with three goals and an assist, while Simonson and McMann each added two goals for Bowdoin. Bates was led by Frederick's two points on a goal and an assist. Bowdoin goalkeeper P.J. Prest (Potomac, Md.) made 12 saves in the win, while Bates Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) had 16 in the losing effort.
