Amherst 8, Bates 5 BATES RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 8-5 LOSS TO AMHERST LEWISTON, Maine The Bates College men's lacrosse team nearly rallied from a five-goal halftime deficit, but the Bobcats could not overcome the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs, who took an 8-5 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory today. Amherst (3-0, 1-0 NESCAC) kept Bates off the board in the first half, taking a 3-0 lead after one period on a pair of goals by rookie Ed Sylvester (Scituate, Mass.). They extend the lead to 5-0 by haltfime. Lord Jeff senior goalkeeper Corey Simonson (Brookline, Mass.) stopped all nine Bates shots on goal in the first two quarters. Bates (3-3, 0-2 NESCAC) scored its first goal of the contest at the 8:52 mark of the second half, when junior Patrick Gaughan (Duxbury, Mass.) converted on a three-man advantage. The Bobcats scored another extra-man goal just over two minutes later, and then trimmed the lead to 5-3 on a diving goal by sophomore Jeff Critchlow (Carlisle, Mass.) with 31 seconds left in the third. Amherst scored just under two minutes into the fourth period on a goal by sophomore Tucker Sowers (Ridgewood, N.J.), but Bates cut the lead to two again 30 seconds later on Gaughan's second tally of the contest on a feed from junior Matt Winterle (Duxbury, Mass.). Bates had a chance to pick up a major momentum change when sophomore goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made a point-blank save and sent the ball the other way, but the Bobcats could not convert on the other end as Simonson made a couple of equally impressive saves. Bates was unable to get any closer than two goals after that. Bates' Gaughan and Critchlow and Amherst's Sylvester and Chris Condlin (Baltimore, Md.) each had two goals in the contest. Bobcat junior Dave Frederick (West Hartford, Conn.) added two assists. Dobbyn made 13 saves in the loss, while Simonson picked up the win with 19 stops. 1 2 3 4 F Amherst (3-0, 1-0 NESCAC) 2 3 0 3 - 8 Bates (3-3, 0-2 NESCAC) 0 0 3 2 - 5 SCORING Goals Bates: Patrick Gaughan 2, Jeff Critchlow 2, Jack Sandler.
