TUFTS FENDS OFF BATES IN NESCAC SHOWDOWN, 8-7
LEWISTON, Maine -- Tufts University junior attack Dan Kollar (Middle Island, N.Y.) scored six goals today to lead the visiting Jumbos to an 8-7 road victory over the Bates College Bobcats on Garcelon Field.
The Bobcats (8-5, 0-5 NESCAC) jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the end of the first period. Sophomore attack Dave Frederick (Hartford, Conn.), who tallied a career-high five goals the day before, notched three goals in the opening stanza. Tufts rallied in the second period, tying the game on the first of two goals by sophomore attack Jon Zissi (Winchester, mass.) and taking their first lead on Kollar's goal with 24 seconds left in the half.
In a tightly played second half, Tufts (7-4, 2-4 NESCAC) took an 8-6 lead with 5:49 left in the third period. The Bates defense, led by senior goalkeeper David Pillsbury (Gill, Mass.), who made nine of his 14 saves in the second half, did not allow a goal over the final 20-plus minutes of play. Frederick's final goal of the contest with 8:38 left trimmed the lead to one, but the Bobcats could not convert on an extra-man opportunity in the final five minutes.
Frederick had four goals and junior midfielder Aaron Sells (Brookline, Mass.) had a goal and an assist for Bates, ranked 13th in the most recent New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Assocation (NEILA) poll, while Kollar and Zissi were the only goal-scorers for the No. 10 Jumbos. Bates plays host to NESCAC foe Middlebury on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Tufts hosts Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. the same day.
