at New York University Tournament, New York, N.Y., Nov. 22-23 - In the opening round of the New York University Tip-Off tournament, the Bobcats struggled against NCAA-qualifiers NYU, dropping an 83-57 decision. While four Violets scored in double figures, only first-year forward Romell Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) cracked that figure. In his first collegiate game, Padonou had 21 points and five rebounds in 34 minutes. Junior Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.) and sophomore Jesse Lynch (Milford, N.H.) each had eight points, while senior center Tim Sargent (Morrisville, Vt.) led the team with six rebounds. The Bobcats next take on Alfred University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

In the consolation game against Alfred, the Bobcats got off to a slow start, scoring just two baskets in the first five minutes. The Bobcats shooting woes continued, as the hit eight of 29 shots in the first half. Combined with 19 turnovers before the break, the Bobcats trailed by as many as 19 points before heading to the locker room down 42-27. First-year head coach Joe Reilly rallied the troops, though, as Bates outscored the Saxons 15-4 to open the second half to cut the lead to 46-42 six minutes into the half. Alfred responded with an 11-0 run of their own to over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach, going on to a 70-55 victory. The Bobcats' brightest start for the second day in a row was first-year forward Rommell Padonou (Libreville, Gabon), who collected 23 points and six boards, earning All-Tournament honors. Sophomore guard Will Dockery (New York, N.Y.) playing in front of a hometown crowd led the team with seven rebounds (four offensive), while classmate Jesse Lynch led the team with a pair of 3-point field goals.

at U-Mass Boston Tournament, Nov. 28-29 - Facing their third post-season qualifier in threee games, the Bobcats dropped a 60-47 decision to 1997 ECAC runners-up UMass Boston. After hitting just five field goals in the first 12 and a half minutes to fall behind 26-12, the Bobcats ended the first half on a 14-33 run to cut the Beacon lead to 29-26 at the break, led by senior co-captain Tim Sargent (Morrisville, Vt.) and his eight points. First-year forward Rommell Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) grabbed eight board in the first half. After cutting the lead to one on a pair of Jesse Lynch (Mt. Vernon, N.H.) buckets, the host Beacons scored the next nine points to take a 40-30 lead and extended it from there. Lynch led the team with 11 points, while Sargent and junior Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.) each had 10 for the Bobcats. Timoll recorded a double double with 11 rebounds, while Padonou ended with 10. The Bobcats face Framingham State in the consolation game at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Bobcats (1-3) picked up their first win of the season for new head coach Joe Reilly with a 63-53 win over Framingham State College (0-4) in the consolation game of the Harbor Invitational. First-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) was Bates' leading scorer for the third time in five games, scoring 25 points and grabbing five rebounds. After taking a 13-11 lead just under ten minutes into the game, the Bobcats did not lose the advantage the rest of the game. In the second half, Bates outscored the Rams 15-2 from the free throw line, extending a 30-28 halftime lead to as large as 11 points after the break. Three other Bobcat starters scored in double figures: sophomore guard Jesse Lynch (Mt. Vernon, N.H.) had 12 points, while senior captain Tim Sargent (Morrisville, Vt.) had 11 and eight rebounds, while junior forward Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Vt.) recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Padonou earned his second straight All-Tournament honor for the Bobcats.

UNE at Bates, Dec. 2 - In a game that was nip and tuck all the way, the Bobcats (1-4)came out on the short end of a 66-60 decision with the University of New England Nor'easters (2-2). UNE led for much of the first, by as many as six at one point. Sophomore Jesse Lynch (Mt. Vernon, N.H.) kept the Bobcats in the game almost single-handedly, scoring 12 of the team's 27 points on four 3-pointers. UNE took a 29-27 lead into th locker room. Bates came out firing in the second half, scoring three of the first four baskets to go up 33-31. UNE scored on their next possession and also benefitted from a technical foul from first-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon), hitting one of two free throws to take a 34-33 lead. The Bobcats took Padonou's emotion and used it to their advantage, going on a 17-7 over the next seven minutes to take a 50-41 lead with 9:35 to play. Junior Andy Hall (Forestdale, Mass.) had six points in the run, while classmate Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.) had five. The Nor'easters clawed back, though, with a 14-6 run of their own over the next four minutes to cut the Bobcat lead to 56-55. While Lynch's only bucket of the second half put Bates up 60-57 at the 4:28 mark, UNE scored the last nine points of the game, taking their first lead in more than 15 minutes with 2:54 remaining. Lynch led ll Bates scorers with 15 points, while Hall had 12 points and 12 boards. Padonou, who was named Maine Rookie of the Week earlier in the day, had seven points and four boards in 13 minutes of work due to foul trouble.

at Bowdoin College, Dec. 4(taken from a Bowdoin press release) Bowdoin College first-year Hugh Coleman (Lynn, Mass./Charlestown H.S.) nailed back-to-back three-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half, breaking open a 31-31 tie and lifting the Polar Bears to a 69-55 victory over Bates on Thursday evening. Coleman ended the evening with a trio of trifectas and 11 points.

Bates (1-5) had the better of play in the first half, building as much as an eight point lead (25-17) helped by the inside play of first-year Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) who ended with a team-high 15 points. Bowdoin (4-1) jumped back in the game with defense and a Nate Houser (Medway, Mass.) buzzer-beating jumper that tied the score at 31-31 at the end of the half.

Coleman buried his three-points to start the second frame and the Bobcats would get no closer than six points the rest of the way. David Lovely (Milton, Mass.) led the Polar Bears with 15 points while Erich Buschmann (Oakland, Maine) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.

Jesse Lynch (Mount Vernon, N.H.) buried all four of Bates' three-pointers on his way to 14 points while Andy Hall (Forestdale, Mass.) hauled in eight caroms.

Bates at Maine Maritime, Dec. 6 - Behind 22 points from first-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon), the Bobcats (2-5) held off Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, 55-50. Padonou had 14 points in the first half as the Bobcats went into the break with a one-point lead, 27-26. The game remained close in the second half with Padonou on the bench in foul trouble. With the game tied at 48 in the last three minutes, sophomore guard Jesse Lynch (Mt. Vernon, N.H.), whose playing time was limited due to injuries stepped up, scoring five straight points to put the Bobcats up 53-50. Southern Maine at Bates, Jan. 7 - Southern Maine (4-7) ended the first half on a 23-11 run to extend a four point lead to 16 and was able to stop the momentum of the Bobcats' (2-6) surges in the second to take a 68-56 win in Alumni Gym. The Huskies took advantage of a 23-11 turnover advantage in the game to extend their winning strea to three games. The Bobcats were led once again by first-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) who had 18 points and eight rebounds. Bates was without starting guard Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.) due to injury.

Thomas at Bates, Jan. 14 - Coach Joe Reilly earned his first win at home as the Bobcats (3-6) topped the Thomas College Terriers (5-9), 70-62, Bates' best scoring performance of the season. Thomas led, 31-30, at halftime and went on an 8-3 run early to take a 39-33 lead. With three minutes gone in the second period, the Bobcats answered with a 12-1 run of their own. Leading the way was junior guard Michael Tisdale (Kingston, R.I.), who returned to Bates after a year and a half away from the school. He hit a pair of 3-pointers and had an assist in the decisive run. The Bobcats took leads of as large as 10 points, but the Terriers could not climb back into the game. Tisdale led the Bobcats with a career-high 21 points, 18 of which came in the second half. The Rams went on a 9-0 spurt late in the first half to end the stanza up 32-24. The Bobcats played even in the second half, but could pull no closer than six points. Emerson at Bates, Jan. 17 - Junior guard Hector Negron (East Boston, Mass.) had 22 points, including 3-for-4 on three pointers in the second half as the Emerson College Lions (6-3) downed the Bates College Bobcats (3-8), 83-71.

The Lions, who never trailed in the game, jumped out to a 41-31 halftme lead by forcing 15 Bates turnovers and hitting on 12-of-24 shots from the field.

The Bobcats fell behind by as many as 14 points with 6:02 remaining, but went on a 9-1 run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to seven, 71-64, when junior guard Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.) converted a lay-up from sophomore Jesse Lynch (Milford, N.H.). The Lions answered with a three-pointer from sophomore Jake Postorino (Clearwater, Fla.) to kill Bates' momentum.

Emerson placed five players in double figures, led by Negron's 22 points, six assists and six steals. junior Jake Kelley (Woburn, Mass.) also had 22 points. While they made a few runs in the second half, shooting 44 percent from the floor, a couple of Tufts 3-pointers stopped Bates momentum. Colby at Bates, Jan. 24 - Coach Joe Reilly's squad made a valiant comeback effort, but Colby's hot first-half shooting proved too much to overcome, as the the Mules (9-4) defeated the Bobcats (3-10), 88-68. In the first half, Colby shoot a sizzling 59 percent from the floor, including eight of 10 three-pointer, with six different White Mules hiting treys. The Bobcats were led by six points from guards Burke Davis (Cohasset, Mass.) and Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.) with six points each. The second half was stolen by junior guard Michael Tisdale (Kingston, R.I.), who connected for 21 of his game-high 23 points after the break, hitting eight of 13 shots from the floor and five of six from the line as the Bobcats outscored Colby 42-33 in the second half, holding the Mules to just eight of 21 from the floor.

Bates at Hamilton, Jan. 31 - (Taken from a Hamilton College press release) In men's basketball action this afternoon at Scott Field House, the Hamilton Continentals cruised to victory over the Bates Bobcats, 107-73. Hamilton (7-6) led 50-35 at halftime and never looked back as they shot 53 percent from the floor for the game. Junior center Jon Schmeigel had an excellent shooting performance (9-13) with 21 points, while also grabbing 15 rebounds. Junior forward Michael Schantz chipped in 18 points and senior guard Kevin Thorpe added 13. Bates (3-11) struggled with Hamilton's pressure the entire game, shooting 38.9 percent from the field and committing 19 turnovers. The Bobcats were led in scoring by first-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) with 16 points and a double-double from junior guard Garth Timoll (Owings MIlls, Md.), who had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Bates at Univ. of Maine- Farmington, Feb. 2 - The Bobcats (3-12) improved their highest single-game scoring total for the second straight game, but it wasn't enough to overcome the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers (8-9), who won a 91-75 decision. In the first portion of the game, Bates stayed close thanks to the outside shooting of junior guard Mike Tisdale (Kingston, R.I.) who connected on his first three 3-point attempts of the game. When Tisdale went cold, the Beavers capitalized and took a 48-35 lead at the break and Bates was unable to recover. First-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) looked strong in his second game back from an ankle injury, scoring a game-high 26 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Tisdale chipped in 14 points and junior guard Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.) added 12.

Wesleyan at Bates, Feb. 6 - The Wesleyan University Cardinals (9-7) hit four key 3 point field goals in the second half to hold off the Bates College Bobcats (3-13) in the second half, 89-77. Bates stayed close to the Cardinals throughout the game, pulling within one point on nine different occasions, but could not pull ahead.

Wesleyan used three consecutive trifectas, two from senior guard Matt Kingsley (Hamden, Conn.) to open a 64-55 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Bates answered with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the lead deficit to three points on a three-pointer from junior guard Garth Timoll (Owings Mills, Md.). The game was within two points with 2:14 remaining, but Wesleyan scored the final 10 points of the game, including six for six from the line, to clinch the victory.

First-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) led all scorers with 23 points and seven rebounds, while senior captain Tim Sargent (Morrisville, Vt.) had a career-high 22 points. Wesleyan was led by Kingsley's 20 points, including four three-pointers and 17 from sophomore guard Sean O'Brien (Bristol, Conn.), who shot 11 for 13 from the line.

College at Bates, Feb. 7 - Facing Connecticut College (16-2), the fifth-ranked team in New England, the Bates College Bobcats (3-14) acquitted themselves well, though they came out on the short end of a 78-62 score. Other than a 7-0 run to open the game by the Camels and a 6-0 Bates run which gave the Bobcats a brief 12-11 lead, neither team scored more than two consecutive baskets in the first half. First-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) had a game-high 12 first-half points as the Bobcats trailed 33-27 at the break. Bates pulled to within one point less than three minutes into the second half, at 35-34 when Padonou converted a three-point play, but Conn. went on a 14-2 run at the 15:20 mark to go up 53-38, and the Bobcats could not climb back in it. Padonou led Bates with 22 points, while senior captain Tim Sargent (Morrisville, Vt.) had a 17 points and seven boards.

New England College at Bates, Feb. 17 - In a game postponed from January because of the ice storm, the Bobcats (3-17) dropped a 69-56 decision to New England College (16-7). With leading scorer Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) held out of the game by coach Joe Reilly for geting ejected from Saturday's game with Middlebury, the Bobcats were at a distinct disadvantage. Bates' bench only went two players deep, while the Pilgrims used 13 players in all. Senior captain Tim Sargent (Morrisville, Vt.) had his second straight solid game with game-highs of 18 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Jesse Lynch (Mont Vernon, N.H.) had a season-high 17 points, including four o nine from three-point range.

After calling a timeout, the Lord Jeffs went on a 23-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 28-14 lead. Amherst never looked back, shooting 60 percent from the field in the first half to establish a 53-32 lead. While the Bobcats did cut the lead to 16 in the second, three consecutive 3-point field goals by Amherst nullified any dents Bates tried to make. Four players scored in doubel figures for the Bobcats, led once again by first-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) who had 19 points in 25 minutes. Classmate Jim Reed (Mercer Island, Wash.) had 10 points in a starting roll, as did junior Mike Tisdale (Kingston, R.I.) off the bench.

Bowdoin at Bates, Feb. 28> - The Bowdoin College Polar Bears (14-10) earned a split of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin conference title with a 77-66 win at Bates (3-21). Bowdoin and Colby split the season series with both teams sweeping Bates.

Bowdoin rushed out to a 16-3 lead to start the game, but Bates answered with a 17-6 run over the next five minutes to cut the lead to 22-20. The Polar Bears made two or three other runs in the half, but the Bobcats answered all of them, even taking a brief 36-35 lead with 1:05 left in the first half. Bowdoin scored seven of the last nine points of the half to take a 42-38 lead into the half. Junior David Lovely (Milton, Mass.) led all scorers at the break with 14 points, while first-year forward Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) had 12 points for Bates.

Bowdoin came out firing in the second half, opening with a 11-1 run over the first 4:31 to take a commanding 53-39 lead as Lovely hit two three pointers and sophomore guard Wil Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) hit a trifecta and two free throws. In the second half, Bowdoin shot six for 13 from three-point range and just three of 14 inside the arc. Bates struggled even more, hitting eight of 27 overall in the second half.

Lovely led all scorers with 24 points, while first-year guard Hugh Coleman (Lynn, Mass.) had 14 and Smith had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

For Bates, Padonou had 22 points, while senior captain Tim Sargent (Morrisville, Vt.) had 13 points and 10 rebounds in his final collegiate game. The Bobcats end the season having lost 15 in a row. Their 3-21 record is the worst since 1953-54.
