The Bates College football team (0-2) lost a tough game to Tufts (2-0), 28-6. The defense played well and the offense moved the ball successfully, but the Bobcats were plagued by turnovers and missed opportunities.

Junior Ryan Jarvis (Dove Canyon, Calif.) set a new school record with 40 carries in the game. He picked up 138 yards, giving him 100-yard games in his two career starts.

The Bobcats defense forced three fumbles in the first half, all recovered by sophomore defensive back Paul Calner (Narragansett, R.I.). Despite the terrific field position Bates received, they were unable to convert the chances into points, missing field goals of 31 and 33 yards.

With time running out on the first half, it looked like the teams would enter the locker room in a scoreless tie, but Tufts took advantage of a couple of Bates penalties and scored with 13 second left in the second quarter. The Jumbos used Bates' mistakes in the third quarter to open up a 21-0 lead.

The Bobcats scored their first points of the season in the fourth quarter on an impressive 12-play, 77-yard drive that took five minutes. Jarvis had 12 carries for 33 yards in the drive. Bates converted a pair of fourth-down chances, as junior QB Adam Greenlaw (Millinocket, Maine) connected with junior wideout Paul Fantasia (Watertown, Mass.) for nine yards on 4th and five and fellow Stearns High School grad Josh Howes (Millinocket, Maine) for 11 yards on fourth and nine before hitting Fantasia from 10 yards out for the TD.

Sophomore defensive back Pat Collins led the defense with 10 tackles, while five different Bobcats had sacks, including Calner with a 20-yard sack.

The Bobcats open the home season against Williams on Oct. 10.
