Coach Mark Harriman's defense was impressive in Bates' opening football game, but the offense was stymied by Amherst, the top defensive team in the NESCAC for the past two season running, as the Lord Jeffs (1-0) took a 21-0 victory against the Bobcats (0-1).

The Bobcats held Amherst to three of 16 third-down conversions and one of four on fourth down, but were three of 17 and zero of one on their own third- and fourth-down conversions. The Bobcats' big play came late in the third quarter when sophomore cornerback Tim Price (Wakefield, Mass.) picked off an Amherst pass and returned it 24 yards to Lord Jeff territory. Unfortunately, an Amherst defender stepped in front of a pass from sophomore quarterback Adam Greenlaw (Millinocket, Maine) and returned it for a touchdown on the very next play.

The Bobcats will try to bounce back next week at Tufts.
