LEWISTON, Maine - The Bates College (1-1) football team missed an opportunity to go 2-0 for the first time in 20 seasons when the Tufts University Jumbos (2-0) completed a fourth quarter comeback and earn a 13-10 victory.

The Bobcats got on the board in the first quarter on their second drive of the contest. Senior running back Ryan Jarvis (Boxford, Mass.) ran for 35 yards in a 45 yard drive, scoring his first TD of the season from six yards out. The Bobcats had a chance to take a 10-0 lead into halftime, but the kicker Rejean Guerriero (Spofford, N.H.) missed his first field goal attempt since last year's contest with Tufts. The Bates defense was outstanding in the first half, allowing Tufts 43 yards of total offense.

Tufts had a golden opportunity on the Jumbos first drive of the second half, as Bates was twice called for penalties on third down, but senior DB Jason Silva (Methuen, Mass.) picked off a tufts pass in the end zone. The Bobcats took a 10-0 lead with 6:20 remaining on Guerriero's third FG of the season, the result of junior defensive back Tim Price's (Wakefield, Mass.) third career interception.

After that, the Bates defense, which had allowed nine first downs all day, allowed six in the final six minutes. After Tufts spoiled the shutout bid with their first touchdown with 4:49 on the clock, the turning point in the game came when the Bobcats took over on their own 38 but had no movement on their next three plays. The Jumbos blocked the ensuing punt, took over at the Bates 30, and scored the winning touchdown four plays later with 1:06 remaining on the clock. The Bobcats blocked the extra point, making the lead 13-10, Tufts. Bates picked up two first downs, but were called for holding on the fourth play of the drive and threw an interception on the fifth, ending their bid for the win.

Senior wide receiver Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.) had another fine performance, catching 10 passes for 129 yards, while senior Paul Erickson (Merrimack, Mass.) had 60 yards rushing on 23 carries. The Bates defense held Tufts running back Renato DePaolis (Melrose, Mass.) to just 16 yards rushing a week after he had gone for 200 against Hamilton.
