HAMILTON TOPS BATES, 22-13, IN SEASON FINALE

CLINTON, N.Y. (taken from a Hamilton College release) — The Bates College football team (1-7) ended the 2001 season today with a 22-13 loss at the hands of the Hamilton College Continentals (1-7) in Clinton, N.Y., today.

Hamilton got on the board first when they took the opening kickoff 56 yards in seven plays. Weeden capped off the drive with a three-yard run. Peter Simon missed the extra point making it 6-0. Bates scored when Owen Miehe (Glen Rock, N.J.) capped off a 10-play 38-yard drive with a six-yard catch from Kane Jankoski (Spencer, Mass.). Bates converted the extra point attempt, giving the Bobcats a 7-6 lead with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter.

Just before the first quarter ended Hamilton's Chris McCarthy (Somerville, Mass.) took a punt from Jankoski at his own 35-yard line and scampered down the sideline 65 yards for the touchdown. He broke several tackles on the way to the end zone, giving Hamilton a 13-7 lead. Neither team could score in the second quarter as Hamilton held the 13-7 lead going into the locker room.

Bates came out in the third quarter and tied the game at 13-13 when fullback Paul Tenney (Swampscott, Mass.) caught a four-yard pass from Jankoski. He slipped out of the backfield and was wide open in the flat. Nat Carr's (Cambridge, Mass.) extra point try was blocked. Hamilton took the lead for good when Peter Simon (Miami, Fla.) kicked a 24-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Continentals put the game out of reach when Weeden capped off a 10-play, 42-yard drive on a one-yard plunge, making it 22-13 Hamilton.

Jankoski finished the afternoon completing 17 of 29 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Sean Atkins had 55 yards rushing on 21 carries. He also caught nine passes for 58 yards. Paul Tenney had four catches for 22 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Madden (Concord, N.H.) made 13 tackles, including three solo stops. Pat Foley (Newburyport, Mass.) made 12 tackles.

Weeden finished the game with 160 yards on 41 carries and two touchdowns. Mike Pellman (East Hampton, N.Y.) completed eight of 16 passes for 97 yards. Chris McCarthy had three catches for 55 yards and had a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown.
