BATES FOOTBALL DEFEATS BOWDOIN, 38-35, IN OVERTIME

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College sophomore kicker Nat Carr (Cambridge, Mass.) kicked a 32-yard field goal in the first overtime period and the Bobcat defense held on the ensuing drive to give the Bobcats a 38-35 win over CBB rival Bowdoin College on Garcelon Field today.

The Bobcats (1-6) jumped out to a 28-14 lead at halftime thanks to a big half by junior tailback Sean Atkins (New York, N.Y.), who rushed for 162 yards on 25 carries and a 23-yard touchdown and added a 36-yard scoring reception before leaving with an injury shortly before the break. Bates junior quarterback Kane Jankoski (Spencer, Mass.) threw for three touchdowns in the second quarter, including two to sophomore tight end Mike Moynahan (Gloucester, Mass.) as the Bobcats had their biggest scoring game of the season. Jankoski's touchdown to rookie TE Adam Ranks (Stratham, N.H.) in the third period gave Bates a 35-14 lead headed into the fourth.

Bowdoin (1-6) stormed back in the final period of regulation, scoring three touchdowns in the final 8:41, including a 22-yard run by senior fullback Mike Taylor (Marblehead, Mass.) and a six-yard fumble return by senior linebacker Andrius Knasus (Dorchester, Mass.) on consecutive plays to get the Polar Bears within a touchdown at 35-28. Junior QB Justin Hardison (W. Hartford, Conn.) kept the ball for a 23-yard run and a tie game with 1:34 left in regulation. Carr attempted to tie the school record with a 47-yard field goal as time ran out, but Bowdoin blocked the kick to send the game to OT.

After the Bobcats gained 10 yards on their possession, Carr kicked the game-winning field goal. The Bates defense was staunch on Bowdoin's possession, as sophomore LB Pat Connors (Randolph, Mass.) sacked Hardison on first down and classmate Kurt Chapman (Brunswick, Maine) ended the game with another sack.

In addition to Atkins' big first half for Bates, Jankoski had a career-best 250-yard passing day, completing 19-of-31 attempts, while junior WR Owen Miehe (Glen Rock, N.J.) caught nine balls for 78 yards. Bowdoin was led by 119 yards and two TDs on 17 carries by Taylor and 153 yards passing by Hardison.
