BATES FOOTBALL DROPS ANOTHER CLOSE DECISION TO TUFTS, 12-10

MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates College football team looked dominant early for the second straight year against Tufts University, but the Bobcats could not hang on, falling 12-10 in Medford.

The Bobcats' best drives of the game came on their second and third possessions, each of which lasted more than six minutes. The first ended on sophomore QB Steve Barry's (Boston, Mass.) first career touchdown from six yards out, while the second concluded on a career-long 37-yard field goal by senior Rejean Guerriero (Spofford, N.H.).

Bates had a golden opportunity to increase the lead when rookie linebacker Pat Foley (Newburyport, Mass.) blocked a punt deep in Jumbo territory, but the Tufts defense avoided disaster by forcing a Barry fumble four plays later. The Jumbos went on to drive 85 yards to cut the Bates lead to 10-7 with 37 seconds in the half. The Bobcats tried to conserve the clock to widen their margin before halftime, but it backfired when a poor snap on a punt went out the back of the end zone, costing the Bobcats two points on the safety.

Neither team was able to mount much offense in the second half, but Tufts' best drive went 40 yards and gave senior Howie Rock (Waltham, Mass.) a chance to match Guerriero, hitting a 40-yard field goal that would prove to be the difference in the contest. Bates threatened late, getting as far as the Tufts 29 on their final drive of the game, but two Jumbo sacks prevented the Bobcats from answering Rock's field goal.

Bates was led by Sean Atkins (New York, N.Y.) who rushed for 56 yards and caught four passes for 73 yards. Sophomore Ben Johnson (Lyndonville, Vt.) recorded his first career interception. Tufts' Brian Holmes (Newport, N.H.) had 131 yards rushing to lead the Jumbos.
