The win improves Bates' record to 10-3 on the season with a game on Saturday at Colby College still remaining. The ten wins are the most by a Bates team since 1983. Southern Maine, which dropped its fifth straight game, falls to 10-9 overall. Sophomore Ginny Hurley (Revere, Mass.) gave Bates the early lead scoring her team-leading ninth goal of the season just 2:44 into the contest. Senior Kate Orellana (Middlebury, Vt.) got what proved to be the game winner with 16:01 left in the half when she knocked in a pass from first-year forward Julia Price (Mansfield, Mass.). The goal was set up by the swift counter attack of sophomore forward Leslie Moser (Adamant, Vt.) up the right side. Southern Maine got one back with just under 12 minutes left in the half when senior Alison Drury (Canton, Maine) deflected senior Kim Cochrane's (Biddeford, Maine) long hit from outside the circle up past Bates goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) for her team-leading 14th goal of the season. Both teams had some good offensive pressure, but few good scoring opportunities in the second half. Ficks and USM sophomore Andrea Guerette (Fairfield, Maine) each made key saves on the few good shots each team had to keep the game at 2-1. Ficks finished the game with eight saves while Guerette was credited with 10 stops.
