LEWISTON, Maine - Sophomore attack Barbara Szajda (Farmington, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal five minutes into the first overtime period as the eighth-seeded Tufts University Jumbos (9-6) upended the host and top-seeded Bates College Bobcats (11-4), 1-0.

Though Bates played much of the regulation 70 minutes in the Jumbos' end of the field, the Tufts defense limited the Bobcats to just five shots from inside the circle. Bates also received nine penalty corners to Tufts' two. Both goalkeepers, Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) for the Bobcats and Dena Sloan (Milburn, N.J.) for Tufts made outstanding saves to keep the game deadlocked in regulation.

The Bobcats' best chance in overtime came three minutes in, when sophomore Leslie Moser (Adamant, Vt.) and first-year attacker Johie Farrar (West Paris, Maine) went the length of the field with the ball against a lone Tufts defender before Sloan came out to kick the ball away. Bates earned a penalty corner on the ensuing exchange, but the Jumbos defended it well and brought the ball the other way.

The Jumbos' Dana Chivvis (New Canaan, Conn.) got the first initial shot on Ficks, who turned it away. Szajda got the first rebound, but Bates junior defender Nicole St. Jean (Kensington, N.H.) made the defensive save. Szajda again pounced on the rebound and scored her third goal of the season with 10:35 on the clock to end the game.

Ficks had seven saves in the losing effort, while Sloan made six saves to record her second shutout of the season.

The ECAC tournament semifinals are now set. No. 2 Wesleyan, the top remaining seed will host the semifinals and play No. 6 Colby at 11 a.m. on Saturday, while Tufts will play No. 5 Williams at 2 p.m. The finals will be played Sunday at noon. Bates ends its season at 11-4, the most wins in a season by a Bobcat team since 1982.
