HURLEY HAT TRICK PROPELS BATES PAST PLYMOUTH STATE COLLEGE, 4-1

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College sophomore forward Ginny Hurley (Revere, Mass.) recorded her team's third hat trick of the season as the Bobcats downed the visiting Plymouth State Panthers, 4-1.

Hurley opened the scoring just over 15 minutes into the game on a penalty stroke, caused when PSC sophomore goalkeeper Martha Dennerly (Concord, N.H.) took possession of the ball. Hurley tallied her second goal eight minutes, after dribbling the ball 25 yards and shooting it past Dennerly. Hurley completed the hat trick by poking home a rebound in the in the final minute of the first half.

Plymouth got on the board with 11 minutes to in the game when sophomore forward Sacha Jackson (Sangerville, Maine) came away with the ball after a scrambe in front and fired it home, spoiling Bates keeper Peggy Ficks' (Washington, Conn.) shutout bid. The Bobcats iced the contest with just under five minutes remaining on first-year forward Johie Farrar's (West Paris, Maine) team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Bates' win (8-3) was the first field hockey victory for head coach Wynn Hohlt against the team she coached from 1992-97 and the Bobcats' first over Plymouth State (5-9) since 1977, though the teams have only met three times since then. Ficks made six saves for the win, while Dennerly had seven saves in the losing effort.
